Perugia is a medieval walled town offering many wonderful historical sites. Upon arrival, our driver and guide will pick us up and take us on a guided tour of the Umbrian towns of Assisi and Gubbio. Hotel Brufani Palace for 3 nights (B, D)
Assisi is best known as the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi — patron saint of Italy, founder of the Franciscan order, and one of the most popular Catholic saints in history. Assisi’s main attraction is the 13th-century Basilica di San Francesco, which contains the sacred relics of Francis and beautiful frescoes of his life. There are at least seven other churches well worth visiting for their history, beauty, and connection with Francis or his friend Clare. The town of Assisi, with its Roman ruins, winding medieval streets and sacred shrines is a place worth seeing.
The medieval town of Gubbio can be found with its rich historical and artistic traditions intact. It is the oldest town in the Umbria region. The Palazzo Ducale in front of the Cathedral Dome is a Renaissance building built at the request of Federico da Montefeltro. There is also a very beautiful inner courtyard. While walking through the old town, it is possible to see many craft shops and buy typical products related to the manufacturing of pottery, leather, iron, gold and embroidery.
Day 4:May 8 – Perugia – Cooking class. This morning, you will enjoy learning to cook an authentic Italian meal. During your cooking class, you will learn firsthand how to make a traditional Italian meal from scratch consisting of 4 courses and then dine on your creation. This afternoon and evening is at your leisure to enjoy some time at your leisure to visit the many sites listed here in the town of Perugia.
Top sites to see include the Piazza IV Novembre, a large open square that contains the beautiful Fontana Maggiore, surrounded by the Duomo. The Palazzo dei Priori, and medieval buildings with shops and bars are also worth visiting. The Palazzo Dei Priori, where the town councilors used to meet, has some beautiful 13th-century frescoes and wooden furniture. It houses the National Art Gallery of Umbria and three other museums.
The Corso Vannucci is the main pedestrian street and is lined with elegant shops, bars, and eating places. The Rocca Paolina is a fortress built by Pope Paul III over the houses and buildings he destroyed. You can wander through the underground remains of the streets and houses. There are also art exhibits held in the building. (B, L)
Day 5:May 9 – Orvieto – Todi – Wine Tastings. Tour the towns of Orvieto and Todi and stop at two wineries along the way for some authentic Italian wine tastings. The evening will be at your leisure to enjoy Perugia.
Orvieto is one of the most striking, memorable, and beautiful hill towns in central Italy. Sitting majestically high above the valley floor atop a big chunk of “tufo” volcanic stone, overlooking cypress-dotted Umbrian plains. A colorful-inside-and-out cathedral and some of Italy’s best wine. Orvieto has two distinct parts: the old-town hilltop and the dull new town below. Travelers start at the bottom and then drive or take an elevator or escalator to the medieval upper town. Orvieto’s cathedral is colorful and a Gothic facade.
Todi has one of central Italy’s most photogenic piazzas. There is nothing showy about Piazza del Popolo, just an understated serenity enclosed by the 13th-century Palazzo del Capitano and Palazzo Dei Priori. The façade and rose window of Todi’s Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral are truly worth a picture. The town’s most photographed building stands just downhill from the walls: the church of Santa Maria Della Consolazione was designed by Cola da Caprarola, and its divine geometry follows the classic Greek Cross pattern that became fashionable during the High Renaissance. To get the best view of it—and the hills of central Umbria that form its backdrop—climb the campanile (bell tower) of San Fortunato church. (B,L)
Day 6:May 10 – Transfer to Rome – Rome Tour. We transfer this morning to Rome via train. Check in at our hotel in the city center. Enjoy some lunch, then your local tour guide will give you a tour of the city’s highlights. These sites include The Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, St. Peters church, Colosseum, and more. Enjoy the evening at your leisure. You may also opt to take an evening tour of Rome as the city all lite up at night is truly a site to see. River Palace Hotel for 2 nights (B,L)
Day 7:May 11 – Vatican Tour – Today you are treated to a very special excursion. A private tour of the Vatican. This tour gives you an in-depth view of the best of the Vatican. Enjoy the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museum, St. Peter’s Square and more. This is truly a highlight of Rome. The remainder of the day is at your leisure to visit any remaining sites of your personal interest. Your local guide is on hand to suggest to you any sites or activities you wish.
